Is New York Safe – My Experience

I’ve been to New York multiple times, and before we dive in, I want to clarify that my thoughts are from a tourist’s perspective. My view might differ from someone who lives here. Still, I feel I can offer useful tips for travelers since I’ve spent a good amount of time in the city.

During all my visits, I’ve never felt unsafe. I always try to avoid risky situations and stick to safer areas, mostly in Manhattan and Brooklyn. From my experience, these neighborhoods feel secure, especially in the busy spots.

One thing you’ll notice in New York is the variety of people. You might see people who are homeless or facing challenges like mental health issues or addiction. Sometimes, they might act loudly or unexpectedly, but I’ve found that it’s usually best just to keep walking and not engage.

Of course, comfort levels vary. If you’re from a big city like London or Sydney, this might feel normal to you. However, if you come from a quieter town, it could be a bit unsettling.

While these encounters can feel uncomfortable, they aren’t necessarily dangerous. In my view, that’s the most common “risk” tourists face when exploring New York.

Safest Areas to Stay in New York City

From my experience, Manhattan felt the safest, especially around the popular attractions. Areas like Lower Manhattan and Midtown buzz with energy from both locals and visitors. The lively streets make it a comfortable place to explore, day or night.

In Manhattan, small crimes like pickpocketing can happen in crowded spots like Times Square. I have personally never faced any issues.

Brooklyn has also become a fantastic spot for visitors. In the past, people thought Brooklyn wasn’t safe, but it’s amazing how perceptions have changed. Areas like DUMBO, Williamsburg, Brooklyn Heights, and around Prospect Park have a fun, welcoming vibe. They’re perfect for coffee breaks or just taking in the energy of the city.

While I haven’t explored Queens or the Bronx much, I’d recommend sticking to the popular spots in Manhattan and Brooklyn for a safe and enjoyable experience as a tourist.

Where Should You Be More Cautious

Yes, New York is massive and mostly safe for tourists, but some neighborhoods are better to avoid, day or night.

I’ve heard many stories about gang violence in parts of Brooklyn and the Bronx. While things have improved over the years, some of those stereotypes still hold some truth. For example, I would think twice before wandering into Brownsville in Brooklyn. In the Bronx, areas like Hunts Point, Mott Haven, and Highbridge have higher crime rates and aren’t exactly welcoming to visitors.

But don’t let that scare you away from the Bronx entirely! There are safe spots that are full of life and fun. Places like the Bronx Zoo, Yankee Stadium, and Riverdale offer a lot to explore.

Truthfully, you don’t need to go anywhere near these areas. Sticking to well-known places in Manhattan, popular Brooklyn spots, or safe areas in Queens hotspots like Long Island City, and the Bronx will keep your trip worry-free.

Safety Tips for Tourists in New York

  • Stick to the popular areas: Manhattan and most of Brooklyn are safe places to explore, even at night. If you ever feel uneasy while wandering around, just grab an Uber for a quick, safe ride.
  • Don’t stress about the city’s characters: Don’t worry too much about the city’s colorful characters; it’s common to see all sorts of behavior. Just keep moving and focus on enjoying your adventure.
  • Pickpocket-proof your stuff: To protect yourself from pickpockets, consider getting a travel purse designed to deter theft. They’re affordable and can help you feel relaxed while going through crowded spots like Times Square
  • Know taxi and ride-share rules: When using taxis, remember that fares from JFK to Manhattan are around $100. Stay aware and don’t let anyone overcharge you.
  • Use your common sense at night: At night, stick to well-lit streets and keep your valuables secure.
  • Keep your valuables secure: Avoid showing off expensive items, and store your wallet safely in a front pocket.

Is New York Safe for Solo Female Travelers

I’d generally say yes, New York is safe for solo female travelers, especially in Manhattan and Brooklyn. These areas are lively and well-lit, making them comfortable to explore, no matter the time of day.

While there are safe neighborhoods in Queens, Staten Island, Bronx, but thinking realistically, as a traveler, you’ll likely spend most of your time in Manhattan or Brooklyn anyway.

Personally, I’ve traveled to New York alone several times and never felt unsafe. It’s just like visiting any other major city;  you just need to stay aware of your surroundings. Stick to busy streets, avoid walking alone in deserted areas at night, and always trust your instincts. With a little common sense, New York can be an exciting and safe adventure.

One thing I noticed during my backpacking trips is that hostels in New York don’t have the same social vibe as those in Europe or Latin America. Many are filled with students or people in need of temporary housing. So, while they’re fine to stay in, don’t expect to easily find travel buddies there.
