Bearing witness to the rise and fall of Illyrians, Romans, and Ottomans, Rozafa Castle is the only place in Shkoder that’s got history, legends, and unreal views all in one.
But there is more to it – a wild legend. The story goes that the wife of one of the builders, Rozafa, was buried within the castle walls so the fortress wouldn’t collapse. It’s said that she accepted her fate as long as part of her body was left out so she could still care for her child—weird, I know.
Well, legend aside. The view of Lake Shkoder, the Drin and Buna rivers, and the mountains of Montenegro in the distance is to die for. Especially at sunset.
Just take your time while walking up, as it’s a little steep and rocky, but nothing too crazy. But no doubt it’s one of the best views in Albania.

Shkoder Lake is the largest lake in the Balkans, stretching all the way into Montenegro, a perfect laid-back way to spend an afternoon, as it has the perfect mix of calm water, clean air, and a slow, easygoing vibe.
You can take a boat tour, rent a bike and ride along the shore, or grab some fresh fish at a lakeside restaurant while watching the water. If you enjoy birdwatching, keep an eye out—you can find some pretty rare species here, like Dalmatian pelicans.
Hike from Theth to Valbona (An Absolute Must!)
After spending two days in Shkoder, we went for one of the most unforgettable experiences of our time in Albania, the legendary Theth to Valbona hike—a journey through Theth National Park and some of the most captivating landscapes in the Balkans.
Leaving our bulky luggage behind in Shkoder. With just a few essentials packed, we boarded a minibus for the bumpy yet breathtaking journey to Theth, a remote mountain village that looks like something out of a postcard. Stone houses, wooden fences, and towering peaks in every direction that look like they belong to a different era.
The hike though, is Challenging, but 100% worth it. The climb up to Valbona Pass is where you’ll break a sweat, but with every pause to catch our breath, we were rewarded with views that seemed to belong only in paintings — sharp mountain ridges cutting into the sky, lush valleys unfolding like green carpets, and an endless expanse of nature’s palette. Once we reached the top, we just stood there, taking in all the natural beauty. It was the kind of view that makes you forget how tired your legs are.
Coming down into Valbona Valley, the landscape changed into more open, golden fields, cozy guesthouses with a sense of peace. We spend the night there eating hearty food (fresh bread, local cheese, and slow-cooked lamb). The next day, we set off for Shkoder, taking the scenic route around Komani Lake.
It’s one of the top places to visit in Shkoder, and if you are remotely into hiking, do this trek. It’s not just a hike; it’s an experience you won’t forget for years.
Take a Boat to Lumi i Shales (The Albanian Maldives)
After our hike from Theth to Valbona, we decided to take a different path back to Shkoder, and it turned out to be a magical diversion. We boarded a boat in Fierza, cruising through the stunning fjord-like canyons of the Shala River. The cliffs towering above us felt like something out of the world, leaving us in awe of nature’s beauty.
But the real treasure was Lumi i Shales, often dubbed the “Maldives of Albania.” As we arrived, the vibrant turquoise waters took our breath away. Surrounded by majestic mountains, this hidden oasis offered a soothing escape that felt both refreshing and surreal.

After days spent hiking and boating, we craved a change of pace. So, we rented bikes in Shkoder and set off towards Mesi Bridge, a stunning example of Ottoman architecture just 8 km (5 miles) from the city. The ride through the countryside was a joy, enveloped by stunning mountain views
and glimpses of charming villages, making it a peaceful escape from the urban hustle.
Upon reaching the bridge, we were greeted by its 13 majestic stone arches stretching over the Kir River — a sight straight out of a fairytale. Another thing – In warmer months, you can take a dip in the clear blue waters below, adding a perfect touch to your cycling adventure
